Project Maunga Stage 1
In 2010, an ambitious project was started to redevelop Taranaki Base Hospital and create a healthcare facility that is suitable for the 21st century
The first stage was Project Maunga Stage 1, which would involve building what is now the Acute Services Building. But if we were to have the healthcare services we deserve, and a building that was future-proofed, an additional $10 million needed to be found to supliment the Government funding.
Building a hospital for the future
The Acute Services Building was built from 2010 - 2013. We recognised the importance of not settling with the standard level of care and instead pushing to be able to provide the best. To do that we knew we would need the support of everyone across the region. The ambitious target of $10 million was set, and with the help of some incredible individuals and businesses, we reached our goal and managed to bring the best to Taranaki.
The Stage One Acute Services Building was officially opened in June 2014 by former Minister of Health, Tony Ryall. It includes the TSB Children and Young People's Ward, the Older People's Health and Rehabilitation Ward, as well as general medical and orthopedic wards.
A region of heroes
Because of the generosity of so many businesses and people across the region, the Acute Services Building has been able to care for over 85,000 admissions since it opened in 2013. This is 85,000 people that have been able to be treated locally and received enhanced care.
