The 22,000 square metre New East Wing Building was officially opened on 25 June 2026 by Associate Health Minister Matt Doocey. With $450 million of investment from central government, this new facility will be home to acute services, including Emergency, ICU, Maternity & Neonatal.
What makes this particularly exciting is the $6 million donated by the community to elevate the facilities in this building beyond what is standard, to provide the best care and wellbeing for patients and their carers, This has all been possible because of the incredible community in Taranaki.

Your support made the difference
We have worked closely with local businesses and community groups over the past five years to fundraise for enhancements for all the Project Maunga Stage 2 developments. This includes the Renal Unit, Taranaki Cancer Center and Te Puna Wai Kātea, as well as the New East Wing Building.
We have been amazed at the generosity shown, with over $8.8 million donated or pledged in the last 5 years to the various Project Maunga Stage 2 projects. This generosity will impact thousands of people for many years to come.
Support local healthcareLocal heroes
Toi Foundation
The Toi Foundation saw the benefit of supporting local healthcare early on in the project, and chose to donate a substantial sum to the Neonatal Unit.
The Toi Foundation are an incredible asset for Taranaki and have been huge supporters of the Taranaki Health Foundation, having also donated $1.5 million to the Taranaki Cancer Centre.
Methanex
Having previously supported the Angiography Suite built in 2016, we were very pleased to have Methanex choose to support us again for this project. With a desire to support local Neonatal care, Methanex donated $2 million to the Methanex Neonatal unit.
Not Satisfied with just this, Methanex have continued to support Neonatal Care, helping to establish the Million Steps Challenge held every September.
Rapid Relief team
The Rapid Relief Team understand what it means to support those going through a traumatic experience. They support emergency services during times of crisis and major disasters. So it was an easy decision for them to donate $1.5 million to the Rapid Relief Team ICU.
Made up with donations from several businesses around the region, the Rapid Relief Team’s gift means has allowed us to upgrade the beds in the ICU and provide other comfort enhancements for our most critically ill patients. Centre.
